Bangalore city contributes to about 4% of the entire population of drug users in the country, says the United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) in a study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS)*. The study also divulged that majority of drug addicts were initiated into the habit due to peer group pressure & curiosity (upto 70%), along with stress, loneliness and the perils of urbanisation as the primary causes.
**NIMHANS has also discovered that Bangalore city has the highest suicide rate in the country (17% of total). STDs, child sexual abuse, exploitation of women, teen pregnancies, abortions etc. are some among several other social crises that are on an exponential rise in this city. Kêrygma is an urban ministry, born out of a vision that Jacob and Sheela Isaac received to communicate God's love to today's urban populace, particularly the youth. After offering their “five loaves and two fish” the terrace of the Isaacs' home, where the “Coffee house” concept was birthed – has proved as a great start for them to start a hangout for young people in the city.
The Kerygma office is housed in another location away from the Coffee House.
